Over the past four years we have been following the development of a number of single family “green” homes in Portland, Oregon. Portland pretty much boasts the highest concentration of certified homes (ie: LEED, Earth Advantage, Energy Star) in the northwestern US. As these homes have been built, sold, and even resold, a strong pattern is emerging that the resale values of certified green homes dramatically outperform standard non-green homes of similar age and size.
According to the Earth Advantage Institute, existing homes with sustainability certification sold for an amazing 30 percent more than homes without. This isn’t an overnight phenomena, as the resale data shows the values have been increasing year over year, for the last 4 years that they have been able to track the data.
